A local resident from Bridgewater has captured the glory of Shenandoah Valley more than once on canvas. Apparently, this artist doesn’t just carry around oils and pastels to mountains and cornfields to capture nature’s beauty. She explains her clippings by pointing out that by using the black and white colors she can put it back to the old ways. To create larger and more beautiful paintings, she clips images of animals and objects, she adds. While telling that the huge mural stretching 15 by 4 ft on her family room is a product of this hobby of hers, she holds up the worn out newspaper with two millstones in it. All in the photo, including the riverbank, the millhouse and the grey mill wheels, look so perfect.
She visualizes all parts of her work, the way she uses photos to detail wood land animals and farm crops or equipment, in the large mural on her wall. According to her, she only uses water in there. Since water dries out faster; it’s not really hard to paint with it.
She showed a new photo cut out about a snow scene and mentioned that she will begin painting it soon. Because snow goes fast, it is easier than the rest She only has two smaller scenes besides the mural that are hung around her home. A lot of her works are sold through a Hagerstown furniture store in Maryland. The artist is always more than happy to paint for her neighbors and friends. So many orders come her way; she usually doesn’t have time to paint them all. She usually gets quite a few rights around Christmas time.
The artist, who is a native of the Green mount section of Rockingham County, began painting when she was 13, when an old lady in the neighborhood gave her a few lessons. Back then a lesson for an entire afternoon with the good lady only cost 25 cents. She showed the very first pallet she used, which her mother made for her when she was little using a paring knife, a drill and a lightweight board. Although the old pallet was smeared with paint everywhere, a note was decoupage on it telling how it was made.
Six years ago their church was torn down, and since then they have dedicated a family room for remaining items. Near their house is a river, which you could easily see through the glass wall covering an entire face of the room. According to her, they wanted to bring the outside on the inside.
She was troubled about finding something that would fit the room as she was making the mural. Her children told her the rustic family room and the bright foliage with rusts, red and gold did not mix well, so she had to redo the mural three quarters through completion. She said that she might not add anymore painting to her home because the sunny den wouldn’t get noticed apart from the large and scenic mural on the wall.
