I am reminded why being a California resident is so desirable now that the rainy, cold days of winter have been replaced by the balmy temperatures of spring . The hillsides are cloaked in vibrant green grass and dotted with poppies. Our beaches are wide open and belong to the locals while they are still too chilly for water sport seeking tourists. The peachy-pink sunsets and velvet blue night skies blend into our majestic mountains on the horizon.. It simply is beautiful countryside. . We have enjoyed spontaneous picnics in meadows beside Ortega Highway and day trips to the SanBernardino mountains to engage in snowball fights. There have been sun filled and exhausting days spent peddling our beach cruisers back and forth on the boardwalk between the Huntington, Newport and Balboa Piers, followed by evening marshmallow roasts at the fire pits on the beach. Yes, life is good. We pack an arsenal of stuff for each of these daytrips. No trip is complete without lip balm, munchies, cans of pop, water bottles, frisbees, a deck of cards, blankets and beach towels. My most favorite of all these little provisions is the Ice Mule. While shopping at a hunting/fishing shop, my husband acquired our Mule ( which is funny because he would never harm a fly). Thinking it might be of use one day, he brought it home. He was right. This wonderful cooler bag has kept our refreshments icy cold for ridiculously long periods of time. In fact, I recently discovered that it had been left in our SUV overnight and was dreading to extracting the deviled eggs that surely would emit offensive fumes upon removal from their Tupperware grave. To my astonishment the eggs and the water bottles inside the soft cooler were still nice and cold, even though they had been in the bag for over 24 hours! Now I take the Ice Mule with me to the grocery store. My ice cooler gets filled with all of the cold items and I can continue running my errands before returning home. I truly love this thing! It won’t be long now till the California shoreline become teeming, noisy meccas for the masses and the lush green hills will turn golden brown. . Traffic on Pacific Coast Highway will be reduced to a slow crawl due to tourists looking for the closest parking spot to the beach (hint, these don’t exist in the summer). You can bet that our Mule will be with us to keep our beverages, snacks, sunscreen and temperaments cool when we do decide to battle the summer crowds. Yes, it will soon be time to relax by the pool with our diet sodas, frozen yogurt and lemonade as the temperature climbs past 90 degrees. Allthough the kitchen will be only be a few steps away I am planning on using the Ice Mule poolside. In fact, once I slip into that lounge chair I might just dwell there all summer long..
