why is brandy glass different?
why is a brandy glass not appropriate for use to drink wine
appropriate or not is a matter of opinion.
the thing about different glasses is that they are all designed to do specific things. for example, a white wine glass or champagne flute are both designed to keep your nose out of the glass. this is because your sense of smell is part of your sense of taste, and the wine would have a much stronger flavor if it were more open. for the same reason, a red wine glass is wider at the mouth so you do smell more of the perfume of the wine. a brandy glass is bowl shaped for a different purpose. as the alcohol is warmed by your hand, the top of the bowl catches the evaporating vapors and keeps them in the glass to enhance the aroma of the brandy, otherwise it would just smell like alcohol. and the list of purposes for different bar glasses goes on and on and on…
that being said, if you want to drink your wine out of a brandy glass, then go ahead, and let the snobs turn up their noses.
