I need to know how to see if something is antique or worth anything?
My husband has a hutch, with bubble glass in the doors, he and his family say is worth alot of money. Of course i disagree, the top wood doesnt match the bottom wood, the scroll work os different on top and bottom, and the hardware on the top is different than the bottom. But, since his parents know so much, and he rarely listens to me, he doesnt see the two as different. help me settle this please.
Look inside the doors and drawers to see if you a maker’s mark on both of them. Failing that, look on the back of each piece.
It sounds like you have a “married” piece, the top of one item that’s been added to the bottom of another. If the wood is clearly different, then there is little doubt that this is the case.
But to get proof, (i.e. somebody’s word they will believe,) take good photographs of the front, side, and close-ups of details such as the different types of hardware and carving/scrollwork you describe. Take the photos and measurements, plus photos of any markings you found to a couple of reputable antique dealers. There will be a charge for a full blown proposal, but they should be willing to tell you if a) it is a married piece and b) whether it is valuable.
You can say to your husband that you wanted to get an idea of it’s value for insurance purposes. However, if you are right, don’t rub it in–you’ve been the on the wrong end of family lore and it won’t endear you to them to prove family story is just a story. Bottom line, you have to live with them.
