Butter Dish Lid
Are we taking proper care of our frogs?
My kids found 2 little peeper frogs yesterday and they want to keep them as pets. We have them in a see thru storage container with a see thru lid. We put little holes in the lid, got them a bunch of ants, put a butter dish lid of water in with them and two big leaves, there also is some dirt in there from the ant hill we got the ants from. My oldest son cleaned out the container this morning and we refilled it for them. Are we taking good care of them? Is there anything else we need? I would like to get a small glass aquarium for them eventually. Thanks for the help.
Food:
I wouldn’t risk ants as a food for a pet with delicate, moist skin. In my experience ants are too likely to bite frogs. You can purchase baby (pinhead) crickets from a pet store. Once you get some it’s easy to breed and raise them yourself . Ask the people at the pet store what other food they would reccommend. They might enjoy fruit flies, but I always worried my frogs weren’t eating enough when I gave them difficult-to-catch flying insects. Peepers are challenging to feed because they are so tiny, but it’s fine to catch them harmless, tiny insects such as spiders. Wild insects are more nutritious than captive-fed insects because of their rich diets, but it’s time-consuming to catch a steady supply.
Housing:
Get a proper aquarium as soon as possible.
Tree frogs love to climb, so items like driftwood and foliage–artificial or (preferably) live plants–are important. They like objects to climb on with surfaces that are sufficiently large and smooth enough to sit on, and that can support their weight. If you get wood from outdoors soak it in a mild bleach solution (then let it dry) to kill potentially harmful bacteria and insects.
Clean the tank with hot water; never use soap, which can be toxic. If you choose to use astroturf as the substrate you could clean it with laundry detergent if you are certain to rinse it so that no residue remains. I prefer natural subtrates, but they are more difficult to clean and probably more important for frogs that like to spend more time on the floor of the tank and/or burrow.
Spring peepers are nocturnal so lighting is unneccessary, and room temperature is probably sufficient. However, the frogs might appreciate an under-tank heater or heat lamp in one spot in the tank, especially a rock. It’s important to protect the frogs from the heat source so they don’t get burned, and to ensure an under-tank heater won’t catch the wood on fire. Ask for help with this at a pet store.
Provide a shallow dish of unchlorinated water (distilled water or tap water that you have de-chlorinated with drops you can get for fish) for the frogs. Replace it daily and as often as the water gets dirty because the frogs will absorb contaminants through their skin. I’ve found that it’s important for it not to be too deep because they like to sit and soak in it, but dislike water so deep that they float. You could put flat rocks in the dish to create varying levels of shallowness.
I reccomend getting some books from the library on the care of frogs, particualrly tree frogs. They are invaluable.
