Quilts: A Piece By Piece Look
Sewn together from various fabric pieces, American colonialists used these fabrics to make warm bedding for the winter. Since the price of importing fabric was high, colonial women and girls decided to sew together various fabric parts to make what is known today as a quilt. Constructed as part of a communal activity, women would hold quilting events and often garnished each quilt with significant family events. Constructed of the same basic parts since colonial times, quilts contain the following parts: a top, middle and bottom portion.
Top Portion
The quilting fabric called the “top” by some people serves as the main decoration piece on a quilt. The top often is decorated with notable personal events, events that may symbolize an individual’s way of life, such as it is with an Amish quilt. Motifs, typically found in Baltimore album quilts, are often shown on the top, displaying birds, flowers or images in an appliquéd block-style of quilting that is synonymous with Baltimore quilts. Other quilts, such as crazy quilts, do not go along with a set design but instead go for a “crazed” pattern using several different quilt blocks that give the quilt an odd appearance. The quilting fabric of a crazed quilt blends a variety of different images, symbols and motifs.
Middle and Bottom Portions
Because of the cold winters, colonial residents needed warm blankets capable of keeping them warm while keeping the cold out to avoid getting ill. Colonists created an insulator within the quilts able to keep out the cold and maintaining the warmth generated by their body heat. Using thin fabrics, such as silk, wool, polyester or cotton, the women would build a lightweight insulation piece for the quilt.
The bottom portion of a quilt serves as the foundation for a quilt, giving support and durability. To stop unraveling from occurring, the top is sewn into the bottom, while the middle is sewn into the top to help keep the insulation in place.
Fabrics for Quilts
Quilt makers typically buy fabric by the yard and prices for fabrics change based on the class of fabric the individual elects to purchase. Quilts are made from many different fabrics, most with different colors and designs. Please note, quilts do not have to carry the most high-end fabric, they just must include some type of fabric.
