How To Prepare A Romantic Dinner For Two
There can be many reasons for wanting to fix a romantic dinner. Perhaps you wish to celebrate a special event like a promotion, a birthday, or an anniversary. Maybe you just want to show someone how special he or she is to you. No matter what your reason for the dinner might be, there are some things that might help you make the evening special.
Earlier that day or the day before, clean house. Vacuum, dust, and eliminate clutter. Use a room freshener liberally, preferably one with odor eliminating properties, five or six hours before time. Plug in your automatic air freshener at least two hours before, since they need a little time to work. Choose some background music, preferably soft instrumentals that will not be a distraction.
Clean off the kitchen counters so that cooking will be easier. Unload the dishwasher so that you can add the dirty ones as you go. This reduces the time you will need to clean up later and prevents an untidy stack in case your guest should wander into the kitchen.
Well before time to start cooking, take inventory to make sure you have everything needed for preparing and serving the dinner. For instance, if you plan to serve a green salad, make sure you have not only the vegetables but also the dressing. Compute how long you will need for each item and then estimate a starting time by working backwards.
Dress your table as elegantly as you can. For example, a black dining room set can be used as an effective backdrop for a dramatic look. White, in the form of dishes or linens, can provide a good contrast. Fresh petals from two or three red roses can be sprinkled on top of the table. Sit down to make sure your centerpiece will not obscure the view of you or your guest. If using candles, place them in holders that can capture dim light, such as polished metal or faceted cut glass.
You might want to use a Camerons stovetop smoker for the meat you will be serving. This eliminates the need to add heat to the kitchen with an oven. You can smoke tender, flavorful chicken, chops, or steaks more easily than most other methods. You could also use it to steam any vegetables on the menu.
A hand mixer can help eliminate lumps in your mashed potatoes. If you plan to use the instant type instead of preparing them from scratch, you may wish to alter the directions on the box. Increasing the butter and milk while decreasing the water will yield a creamier dish. Shredded cheese, paprika, or bacon bits added prior to serving can make them taste and appear more special. Do not wait until the day of the dinner to begin experimenting, however. Take the time to create your personal variations once or twice first, so that you will have the recipe fine tuned before then.
A tossed green salad can make an excellent appetizer. Use a mix of both romaine and iceberg lettuces, then add a few cherry tomatoes, olives, and maybe some pecan pieces. You can also mix in some shredded or diced cheese, grated carrots, or minced sweet gherkins. Add your croutons and dressing, toss, and serve. Bottled dressings can be used or you can create your own. One very simple dressing is just ketchup, mayonnaise, dill seeds, and seasoning salt stirred together to taste and then chilled prior to serving.
Dessert can be special without having to be elaborate. Cherries jubilee is a nice choice, but it is not always practical. Instead, consider choices such as fresh peach shortcake, triple chocolate cake served with ice cream, or gingered fruit cups.
