What to do with obvious re-gifted present – I can’t return it or use it!?

For a wedding gift, someone gave us a set of four Mikasa crystal salad plates. Sounds like a great gift, right? Problem is, only three came in the box. It was obvious there should have been four because the outside of the box said “set of four” and each plate had a sticker that said the same thing.

These plates were not on our registry (so I can’t complain to Bed bath and Beyond), and they were given by my mil’s friends who the groom and I do not know. I don’t mean to be ungrateful, but if it’s the thought that counts, they sure didn’t put much thought into this gift.

I am tempted to mention something in the thank you note like, “Thanks for the three salad plates. Hopefully I’ll find a fourth plate on ebay to complete my set.” Is this rude, or should I just ignore it and dump these plates at the Salvation Army?

Ignore it and if you don’t want them take them to the salvation army or keep them and use two for romatic dinners with your husband (you only need two for that). don’t be ungrateful, maybe she didn’t realize that there were only 3 in there, she could have bought them from someplace like the salvation army, it is the thought that counts and she thought to at least give you something.
