Cylinder Vase
At what temperature can you remold glass? HOURGLASS?
I want to make an hourglass, and I figure if I just take a large, clear cylinder vase, and heat it to the point of “moldability”, I may be able to just twist the glass so the center will be tight and the ends will be wide to connect to the bases.
What do you think about this? Any other suggestions?
The hourglass I want to make is very much like the witch of the west’s.
over 2300 °C (4200 °F).
Be aware that Glass has a transition point, which is lower than the melting point. All you need is to get the glass soft then you can mold it.
There is no point in using Pyrex glass even though it is more resistant to breaking with quick temperature changes. An hourglass would not be subject to sudden temperture changes.
You don’t want to twist the cylinder but instead you should have a mold in half sections that you compress the cylinder with once it is soft. If you twist it you will create stress lines that will cause the hour glass to break on its own or with a slight tap.
I took a course in glass blowing when I was in college as part of my degree in chemistry at Florida State University.
