Does anyone know something about sculpting by Dorothy Thorpe?
Everything I can find about Dorothy Thorpe is all about etching glass. I have a Venus statue that is about two feet high, and appears to possibly be a very dense, heavy resin that has some faint color inside the body. It has a sticker on the bottom that is very worn out, but under magnification it says, “Dorothy C Thorpe Inc. Does anyone know what Ms. Thorpe had to do with art reproduction?
Dorothy Thorpe was a painter and designer from California. Each of the unique pieces that she designed have become highly collectible.As a designer, it is most probable that she set up her own company, hence the inc. following her name – and sold rights to have her work reproduced in materials other than glass which was her speciality. There is a set of plates she designed on sale at http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/showitem.cgi?catid=1929&itemid=91 This is an example of items reproduced to her designs but are not made of glass,just like your Venus statue.
