Rocks glass is commonly used for a drink that would contain ice, a full glass of ice. Typically it’s a one liquor, one mixer drink. Such as a Rum and Coke, or Gin and Tonic, or Vodka and Cranberry, and so on.
An Old Fashioned or highball glass is used for a drink that does not require ice, and if it does, very little, like three cubes. This glass is used for drinks such as an Old Fashion, Manhattan, or even a Martini. Also use this glass for single liquor shots, or shooters. You might use this glass for sipping liquors, such as Cognacs, Scotch, or other high end liquors.
There is a difference in size in these two glasses. Your Rocks glass is typically twice the size of the highball/old fashioned glass. This is to make room for the ice. It also reminds you which glass to use. BIg glass=ice=rocks glass
