What are the limits for a microphone?
Couple a microphone be used with a really huge dish antenna? How far away could a microphone with a 12 foot dish antenna clearly hear a conversation?
Parabolic mics are used all the time, but Cirric is correct, a 12 foot dish would create a field of coverage entirely too large to be useful. What’s wanted is a relatively small surface sufficient to block off-axis sound waves (those coming from behind).
The dish of a parabolic mic is not an antenna (any more than the dish for your satellite TV is). It’s a collector, a reflective surface which concentrates the wavel by gathering it over a broad area and directing it toward the receiver — in this case, the diaphragm of the microphone.
The broader the dish then, the wider area of coverage. If you want to focus on a particular conversation, you want a narrow coverage area. Hypercardioid and shotgun mics are also used for this purpose.
The sensitivity of the microphone has more to do with the thickness and composition of the diaphragm, the type of transducer (mechanical vs. condenser), the impedence of the circuit and the preamp used.
