Summary Of The Libbey Glass Corporation
The Libby glass Company has a history that is long and established. The company started trading at the beginning of the nineteenth century in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. In its original inception, is was known as the New England Glass Company. The name was changed in 1878 when it was bought by William Libbey. As the competition in the industry grew, it was decided to shift the firm to Ohio where there were vast sand deposits and easy access to gas reserves.
Ohio also offered better logistics in the form of an extensive network of railroads and steamship lines. It was not until 1892 that the company was given the name still in use today. Now it is a prestigious brand and one that is in high demand across the US and internationally for items such as water pitchers.
The company has developed a reputation as being great innovators. If we were to study developments in the glassware industry, we would discover that it was designers working for the firm who helped to develop new ideas and trends. An example of which is Joseph Locke who joined the firm at the end of the nineteenth century and helped to revolutionize the production line.
It was Locke who was responsible for creating a number of new types of designs. This included such styles as Maize, Amberina, Peach Blow, and Pomonma. These designs were hand crafted and often used expensive materials. For example, Amberian has a reddish-amber hue due to an infusion of gold.
Fast forward to today and we see that their name is still well known for producing the most enigmatic and unique designs. They also manufacture containers, bottles, windows, and a diverse range of interesting drinks vessels. The mass production of consumer glass items actually started nearly one hundred years ago. It was thanks to the inventor Michael Owen that a machine was made which could automatically create a range of new products.
The age of automation ushered in a time of greater turnover. Personnel and manufacturing costs were brought down while production levels increased. Libbey claim to be the first manufacturer using a special heat treated process to create products that were incredibly durable and strong. In fact, they played a role in designing and manufacturing glass products for a range of industries and not just for the home.
As the sales of automobiles increased during the first half of the twentieth century, so did the demand for strong windshields. The Libbey Company became the foremost producer of windshields in the US. It was because of them that Ohio developed a repuation as an important manufacturing area.
The Libbey glass company has continued to grow and diversify over the decades. In recent times, they have taken over other firms that produce kitchen and dining products, such as water pitchers. Their portfolio today is extensive and broad and produces the most attractive range of glassware suitable for all kinds of homes.
