If a volcano erupted in a desert, would the heat from the lava flows melt the sand and create glass?
a glass desert, how cool would that be?
Only is small local amounts. As lava flows and comes into contact with the ground, or even the air, it chills and forms a hardened crust. Usually you can see inclusions of partially melted material that the lava picks up. But it is rare that there is enough heat to melt quartz sand in significant quantities. Obsidian is formed from silica in the lava, not from melted quartz sand.
