Grape Cluster
How do sandstone spheres form?
Hiking in Southern Utah (home range) and found several hundred sandstone spheres from pea size to softball size. Many of them are attached to others like round globs or pudding. Some of them have lines around the outer edge that makes them look like they were pressed together in a mold.
How do these spheres form? Why would there be several of them clumped together forming odd shapes like grape clusters?
My first guess would be spheroidal weathering, though that’s more common in granite and at large scales. Exfoliation would be another possibility, but again, the sandstone composition and small size seem to make that unlikely. They may be concretions – the grains clump together around some central grain or fossil early in the lithification process. I’d look up pictures of those three things and see which your spheres most closely resemble, if any. I’m sure there are plenty of other, stranger/rarer explanations, but those are some of the most common reasons to find rounded rocks. Strange things can happen in geology, though.
