Some of the Common Myths About Autism

Several misconceptions about autism may hinder people from truly accepting the fact that their child may be autistic. Maybe it would be best to understand what autism is incapable to achieve an understanding about what it truly is. Here are a few of the most widely-perpetuated myths about autism:

• You’ve almost certainly observed this several times in movies of TV shows, but the truth is that not every one of autistic individuals are savants. Yes, you can name quite a few Hollywood movies that depict autistic individuals as such; the truth is that only very few people who have autism can function at this level of cerebral ability. There is selected certainty to the myth, however only a very small percentage of autistic children show such skills.
• Myth #2 – Autism stops a person so much in life that he or she has no hope to settle separately and without support. Quite the opposite, a lot of autistic people are able to hold jobs and function well in community, given that they get the kind of support that they need from their family. Play therapy is a fascinating kind of therapy where a child is encouraged to play with toys, and the toys are intended to ban some form of interaction from the child. Different games that encourage interaction between the child and toys, and in due course involving the child and other people will be helpful in helping autistic children understand how social interaction performs. Therapists can inform you on what kind of games will be most helpful to your child’s level of functionality.

Play therapy is most successful when completed jointly with the child’s parents or guardian, to guarantee that the therapy continues even when outside the therapy session.
