Lampworking Glass
using a bunsen burner for lampworking glass?
hi, i’m new to lamp working glass (my girl friend and I have been playing around for about a month on a hot head torch). I’ve been looking into upgrading to a torch with more oomph or a torch that will run off of natural gas which i can get at a very reasonable price. one option is the minor burner torch but at almost 200 dollars for the torch alone, that is a bit out of my price range. I’ve been playing around with the idea of using a bunsen burner as my torch, i remember bending glass tubing using one in high-school but i don’t know if it will get how enough for bead making applications. also i know they can run off of natural gas which is a plus. so i’m just posting to see if anyone can tell me if this is a good or bad idea and why. thanks for your time
The Hot Head Torch is much hotter than a bunsen burner which is just barely good enough for soft glass and not too good for that (like bigger pieces) and the highest usefulness of the Hot Head is with MAPP gas.
To use natural gas in any serious way you are going to have to add oxygen and get into a minor torch at least. If you do that it will extend into using borosilicate glass (hard glass) which is easier to work as there is less risk of cracking.
What with torches, tanks, work surface, etc., you will have to spend $300-500 to do continuing work.
