Whispering Smith $1.79 News of the wreck at Smoky Creek reached Medicine Bend from Point of Rocks at five o’clock. Sinclair, in person, was overseeing the making up of his wrecking train, and the yard, usually quiet at that hour of the morning, was alive with the hurry of men and engines. In the trainmaster’s room of the weather-beaten headquarters building, nicknamed by railroad men The Wickiup, early comers sleepy-faced, keen-eyed trainmen lounged on the tables and in chairs discussing the reports from Point of Rocks, and among them crew-callers and messengers moved in and out. From the door of the big operators’ room, pushed at intervals abruptly open, burst a blaze of light and the current crash of many keys; within, behind glass screens, alert, smooth-faced boys in shirt sleeves rained calls over the wires or bent with flying pens above clips, taking incoming messages. At one end of the room, heedless of the strain on the division, press despatches and cablegrams clicked in monotonous relay over commercial wires; while at the other, operators were taking from the despatchers’ room the train orders and the hurried dispositions made for the wreck emergency by Anderson, the assistant superintendent |

The Harry Smith Project: Live - $19.99 Harry Smith was not a musician, but he played a vital role in the history of American music. A noted poet, painter and experimental filmmaker, Smith was also a cultural anthropologist who did ground-breaking work in documenting Native-American music and art, but he achieved his greatest impact as, of all things, a record collector. Smith had a massive library of vintage 78′s, and in 1952 he compiled eighty-four rare sides encompassing blues, gospel, ethnic music, hillbilly songs, traditional folk and other styles into a box set of six LP’s called The Anthology of American Folk Music. At a time when reissues of vintage recordings were rare, the Anthology awakened many discerning listeners to the richness of America’s musical heritage, and the set helped to launch the folk revival of the early 60′s, inspiring the likes of Bob Dylan, John Fahey, Joan Baez and many more. In 1997, the Anthology was reissued on CD, and a new generation of music fans began embracing its riches while veteran performers acknowledged its influence. In 1999 and 2001, music producer Hal Wilner staged a series of concerts in London, Los Angeles and New York City in which some of the most adventurous and best respected names in contemporary music paid tribute to the influence of Smith’s work. The Harry Smith Project Live features highlights from these performances, and includes bold and inventive interpretations of songs from the Anthology by Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, Beck, David Johansen, Todd Rundgren, Philip Glass, Steve Earle and many more. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Ken Smith: Landscape Architect $42.35 Both a landscape designer and a public artist, Ken Smith produces designs that range in scale from small public installations to vast parks. He is known for inventive and imaginative gardens and landscapes, some of which use little or no natural plant material. His projects include public, commercial, and private work: urban parks, streetscapes, plazas, gardens, public art commissions, memorials, museums and institutions, urban development and multiuse projects, restoration of modern-era landscapes, waterfront planning and design, and residential projects. Among Smith’s best-known projects are the MoMA Roof Garden, consisting of white gravel, recycled black rubber, crushed glass, sculptural stones, and artificial boxwood plants in a camouflage pattern; the Elevated Acre, a one-acre urban plaza with a sloping topography of planted dunes and an elevated view of New York Harbor; and Orange County Great Park, California, a redevelopment of a Marine Corps air station to include a 2.5-mile canyon, 20-acre lake, cultural terrace, botanical gardens, great lawn, performing arts venue, veterans memorial, aircraft museum, sports park, nature preserve, and wildlife corridor. |
