How do I seal a glass vase with tissue paper glued to it so it can be hand-washed?

I am covering a glass vase with tissue paper (glued to the outside). Is there a particular type of paint or spray-on sealant that will make my vase hand-washable? I am also interested in selling them so I want to be sure it will work well.

I’m assuming you’re using some kind of permanent white glue as your decoupage medium (Elmers GlueAll for example thinned down with water, or ModPodge/etc which are already thinned down).

Permanent “white glues” are water-resistant so you could quickly wash the surfaces as long as every bit of the paper was covered with dried glue** (preferably with 2 or more coats), but most white glues are not strong enough for *soaking* in water (in that case, they could weaken and separate from the glass or just become cloudy from absorbing moisture).

You could brush on a final coat (or two) of a clear polyurethane though since polyurethanes are much tougher (scratches, humidity) and also more water”proof” than white glues or many other “finishes”…though I still wouldn’t suggest soaking the final item.
Polyurethanes come in various brands, as well as in gloss, semi-gloss and matte finishes. They also come in water-based versions and non-waterbased versions (sometimes called “marine” ). Any should be fine to use over the last glue layer but could make some pigments/colorants run (like tissue paper) if those pigments weren’t sealed first.

The brand of polyurethane that’s used for polymer clay a lot is Varathane so it’s a good one… the water-based, gloss version of that also has some special properties that may make it better than other brands and also has UV protectant (in case your items will be in the sun and fade, etc).
