Do Graphic Designs Equate Art?

Anyone who owns vinyl records from the 60′s probably has one or two of his famous designs right in their own home. His widely-known work is known to millions of people, even if his name isn’t, but does this mean it is to be considered art? If you were to ask him he would refuse to even discuss the art vs. design debate. He’d rather we just didn’t use the word ‘art’. Inspiration can come from every day things, such as a postcard sporting an angel and a pair of paper wings. The artist refers to the world as his visual resource. A famous painting’s theme inspired his message in the poster he created for an Italian typewriter company. Thanks to his design an extremely influential studio was opened in New York bringing the concept of design to exciting new heights. He also co-founded one of New York’s major magazines, which influenced the tone of magazines all over the country. A famous trade center boasts a permanent exhibition as well as an observation deck and restaurants; these are all his work. The international AIDS symbol and poster are his work, as is the design of a supermarket chain. He likes to push the boundaries of design, which is one of the reasons he doesn’t like the singular term art as a descriptive of what he does, as he likes to do a little bit of everything.

 

With over at least six million copies printed and distributed to the public, his celebrated poster of a male singer is amongst his most prized pieces. The profile in this elaborate and wild work can also be traced back to a piece by another famous artist, to which the graphic designer’s work was a response. Some have suggested the graphic designer must have been taking mind-altering chemicals when he created it. He has never said he took drugs, illegal or otherwise. Besides two-dimensional designs he’s also created massive playgrounds for both children and adults.
