What is the cost of making your own beer,wine cordials versus buying it from a vendor?
i dont know about wine, i make my own beer though and i can probably make the equivalent of a 24 can case of light beer for $8-10, and a case of good full bodied beer $10-15. like someone else said though, its time consuming and i probably put in 2-3 hours per batch so its not really worth it just to save a couple bucks. and initial investment, youll probably spend $30-100 on equipment. plus once in awhile something goes bad or it just doesnt taste good so you waste the batch. you gotta do it because you like doing it, and it is pretty fun to me to pick out hops, malt, etc. and try to clone a commericial beer i like or come up with a unique recipe. the beer is good too, more micro-beer quality and youll never go back to cheap crap like bud (after you make a couple really bad batches and start to figure out what youre doing). its really not hard though, especially if you brew with extracts. if you want to do it completely from scratch and do a mash its more complicated. i actually started doing it about a year ago with a 2 gallon mr. beer jug (costs $30 at target.com). if you do that though DO NOT make beer the way they tell you to in the kit, get rid of the booster pack and add a pound or so of dry malt extract instead and get some real hops to brew with. it is horrible and really watered down if you follow their kit instructions. go to howtobrew.com or somewhere and read up and use their instructions instead.
